The Collegian is the student-run, independent newspaper at South Dakota State University.

our story

The Collegian is a student-run independent newspaper that has been the voice of SDSU students and Brookings residents for 136 years. Started in 1885, our paper has been dedicated to sharing current news and events on campus with our community of students, staff, faculty and alumni. Since we are students, we speak directly from the student perspective, not only on campus, but also within Brookings. We have a diverse group of student leaders on our editorial and reporting staff. Our staff is full of students from all different backgrounds and areas of study, like engineering, ag communications, political science and, of course, journalism. We take our work seriously and continue to be an award winning paper. But, in the end we are still just a bunch of college kids who love our home at SDSU and being involved on campus.

This year, the adviser for our organization stepped down, leaving The Collegian without an adviser for the first time in over 15 years. The Collegian has always been a student-run organization; but without an adviser, the student staff has had to take on more responsibilities while we continue to wait for a new adviser. This includes finding ways to keep the paper running financially, after a large decrease in advertising sales since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Rabbit Raisers project is to raise funds for the creation of the newspaper and assist with end-of-the-year expenses. The Collegian has been the voice of the students of SDSU and residents of Brookings for over 130 years, bringing light to issues of concern, and sharing stories of student and institutional achievements. We are working hard to preserve that legacy. With the school year coming to an end, we (Emily and Mikey, current EIC and Managing Editor) wanted to end our tenure on a positive note by ensuring the paper is set up for an even more successful for the next 136 years.

  • Our project is to fundraise for the newspaper and assist with end of the year expenses.
  • It is important to have funding for the newspaper so that we can continue to serve the Brookings and campus community.

Where will the money go?

We are appreciative of any and all donations. If we hit our minimum goal, funds will go toward producing the weekly print product and potentially allow for additional pages and additional color within the paper.

Our minimum goal will also allow us to create new opportunities for the students of SDSU to join our organization. If we raise more than we anticipate, we will direct additional funds to new equipment to be used by both the editorial staff and independent contractors (e.g. reporters and photographers).

The Collegian will give weekly updates on the status of our fundraising to encourage donors to help us reach our goal. Our student staff members will also share their stories and experiences at The Collegian and how it has made a difference in their college careers so donors can see how their contributions directly impact our staff.
